Branding No-No’s

This week’s discussion? Branding No-No’s.

So, what are these big no-no’s in branding?

Let’s get started!

Fonts, Fonts, Fonts

I want to drop a bombshell. We didn't talk 澳门皇冠app官网 fonts. We're gonna display it here. It’s the new Comic Sans!

Comment below, agree?

I remember when it had its heyday; I think it's the new Comic Sans. If you're not in the know, Comic Sans is a 可怕的 font.

Papyrus was overused in the early days, too.

《澳门皇冠app官网》 uses the Papyrus font.

Century Gothic, which is actually pretty generic, it's a bit timeless as well, 所以我们喜欢它.

詹姆斯: 不小心, the previous version of our logo (we even had like a little infographic explaining how the brand came 澳门皇冠app官网; it was a boxy thing with the same goldfish), 但字体不是世纪哥特,尽管我们告诉大家它是. It was a default Adobe Illustrator font, which is Myriad Pro, 和意外, it looked a little bit like Century Gothic, the designer forgot to even change it. So, 多年来, we, an actual 市场营销 agency, 使用默认的Adobe Photoshop/ Illustrator字体- Myriad Pro. It's so embarrassing.

Well, I don't know.

Nobody noticed it, but it was so similar too, 我们所有的文件、网站文字和其他一切都是世纪哥特字体, but the logo was Myriad Pro, because they're so similar, 没人注意到!

What's a bigger red flag? Papyrus as a font or Comic Sans?

Oooh, I may not buy from either company. 这很有趣,因为有审美眼光的人——摄影师, 摄影摄像, graphic designers, 任何艺术家, 字体实际上迎合了他们的思维方式, they make massive judgments off on fonts. Some people just don't even see it; they just read the text, they don't even see the design behind it, but I would say anyone creative or artsy,

For me, yeah, I agree! I won't mention the name; I've heard it's great, If you can make that design selection choice, what else are you going to miss, It speaks volumes to me.

Technically, they're different things. You could have the worst logo in the world, but your staff is amazing, they make great food, but the thing is, you've started off on the wrong foot. You're like, Hi, my name is (gibberish). It's like - Sorry, I didn't catch that. You made a bad first impression.

Red on Black and other faux pas...

(The next point will be) Contrast. You roll over the text, the link goes from white on black, which is high contrast - easy to read, you roll over, a link goes red, or the link goes dark blue, or the link goes yellow, you can't read it anymore. That's just unnecessary - don't do that. It’s a bad user experience (UX). 和 sometimes the headlines, like they've chosen a headline colour that you can't read properly; yes, your text is really, 真正的大, you've used a big font, 但你看不清,因为它的颜色很奇怪,背景也很奇怪. I don't know if it’s an accident or for artsy purposes; either way, it's a total mistake.

I'm not going to read it. Yellow heavy fonts are a no-no for me, too.

Can you think of another branding, No-No?

I used to say gradients included in your logo. 对我来说,把渐变作为你的标志的一部分是一个很大的禁忌, but now I'm starting to come around to it. I don't mind it as much. That's just how we change.

That's a 100% borderline decision. That’s not going to work,

詹姆斯: 它曾经在社交媒体、网站或视频上看起来很好——任何有效的数字, you can get away with it, 但是一旦你把那个东西打印出来或者你试着把它做成某种标志或贴片/刺绣, you have all sorts of issues with that.

Beware of Using Made-up Words

This can go in two different directions,

The bad one first: Is one of a company I started with my buddy in college; we took the word 媒体 这个词 火山喷发 and joined them together; we were 媒体ruption,其实当你说出来的时候,这并不是最糟糕的词. It was all in lowercase font. . I probably gave a hundred out,

另一个测试是你在和别人打电话, you're not face to face; they can't lip read or hear, 所以他们说, “What's your email address?“哦,是…… , very frustrating. So beware if you're gonna make up a word; 短 and 甜蜜的 is a lot better in your making up a word.

Googol: G-O-O-G-O-L. A Googol is an extremely large number. It's got many, many zeros after it (100 zeros!). 和 it became Google.

So, 造词, 但是再一次, his own business partner misheard it, wrote down the wrong thing, got that trademarked, that became Google as we know it.

I can appreciate that side of it.

As long as you stick with those, it should be pretty simple because, 特别是在饮料/酒精或葡萄酒(行业)工作时, 像我一样, people request it (the product), 正确的? If you don't feel comfortable pronouncing it, Nobody wants to feel stupid, so that's really important; can you read it? Can you pronounce it? Can you request it?

它也非常, 与选择网站名称非常相关:容易拼写, easy to pronounce, 短er 更好的 and the more 令人难忘的, 更好的.

It's very, very hard because so many .coms are gone when you go to search; maybe even your own business name is actually taken by somebody else in a different country, Are any of them safe to buy and use in public?

When you say my website is called www.去这里.com; they're not going to necessarily remember that. So, it's another stumbling block for people.

因为假设每个版本的gohere-dot-anything都被取走了这里的go(破折号)是可用的, then you have to decide if that is better. 这是不是更注重品牌,更容易解释, “Our company's called go here, but our website is hereyougo.gohere”.

For example, I’ll use we are go.here or “shop go here”

詹姆斯: 是的, if it follows your other golden rules: 短, 甜蜜的, 令人难忘的, 容易拼写, easy to pronounce. 你可以做电话测试,你说,“我的名字是…… or our website's called 如此这般, and you don't have to spell every letter out. They say “Okay, so it's go here.com, it's g-o-h… and they get it. Those are the pass/fail tests,

詹姆斯: 和 people use that a lot. 很多电子邮件地址都写着(例如)hello@twincreek媒体.com, that's their replacement for info@. Versus admin@ or something like that. I'm not sure if that was five super no-nos,

Branding No-No's Summary

诺亚: 总之, font selection is very important - avoid Papyrus and Comic Sans.

詹姆斯: 看着你的 colour contrast on both digital & 印刷材料.

Don't use a dash in your 域名, if at all possible, try to make it easy to say, 容易拼写, 而且很容易要求,而且不会产生一个非常奇怪的名字,人们不会发音.

詹姆斯:go after dot coms or your country extension. The other ones seem to come and go,

Stay tuned, subscribe, like, comment!
